Consists of ten designs for plates that appeared in the Art Amateur and an etching that is similar to one of the plate designs. Six of the full size plate drawings depict fish, including a perch, trout, shad, pike, striped bass, and bluefish; they were part of fifteen piece set known as "fish service." Another Volkmar plate illustration shows teal ducks swimming among blue flags and cow lillies. Also included are: a floral watercolor design for a plate by Harriet B. Powers, a decoration for china pottery by M.L. Macomber, and a decorative head of a woman by Ellen Welby. When the illustrations were published in the Art Amateur they were accompanied by instructions on color and technique for painting. The etching portrays a family of ducks. The plate is signed by Volkmar and the name G.W.H. Ritchie, the printer, appears under the illustration.

Charles Volkmar was a painter, etcher, and potter. He studied in France with Antoine Louis Bazre and Henri Harpignes for about 15 years and then worked in the New York City area for many years.
